I have a Dell Dimensions computer which is 4 years old. No problems until a
week ago when fan was getting loud. Turned off computer for the night, next
day black screen comes up saying CPU fan not detected. Took to a repair
shop. Just received a call from repair shop saying that it would be $295 to
fix due to CPU fan and cracked mother board. I am pretty naive when it comes
to computers so I need help. I asked technician how the motherboard could
have cracked because it sits on a shelf and is neber moved. He offered no
suggestions. Also, told me I could get fixed for $140 if I want used parts.
Warranty is the same for new and used parts which is 21 days. Yikes!! That is
not too long of a time. How can mother board get cracked? Should I get a 2nd
opinion? Need some friendley advice on these issues please. Thank you

If you never had the case open, then my guess is the shop may have cracked
the motherboard by pushing down on the fan/heatsink assembly. That said, it
would however take far more that normal pressure to make it crack.

What model Dimensions is your PC?
Also does the PC boot, load Windows and run OK, or do you just get an error
message?

IF...they replace the mother board they had better replace it with the same
model from Dell..........or your XP installation will not work and maybe not
be able to reinstall...depending upon the type of Operating System Dell
included in your purchase...
It is is just a "recovery" partition it had better be the exact same
motherboard.
Good luck in getting them to admit they cracked your motherboard.
On the other hand for about $300.00 more you could actually get a new system
from Dell.

The case was open one other time. The computer is a Dimrnsions 2350. As soon
as I turned the computer on the Bios screen comes up saying fan not detected,
but I was able to bypass that screen and go straight to the internet.
However, once I knew that I was still able to log on and everything else
worked, I shut it off for fear I would burn something out due to the no fan
issue. I had it on for maybe 10 minutes. I did tell the repair shop that
everything else was working aside from the initial screen that said no CPU
fan detected. I also asked the repair guy if he just fixed the fan without
touching the motherboard, would that be ok. He said that the fan still will
not work unless he fixes the other problem. I am not computer literate, so I
cannot argue with him. What to do? Let him fix it for the $140. I am not
entirely sure what he is going to do exactly with the motherboard. He just
said there was a crack in it. Thanks for any more info.

I will call the repair shop and ask them exactly what they are fixing,
replacing etc. Since I am not computer literate, I will ask them about what
you had mentioned, at least I can pose a question to him now, since I have no
idea what to ask. Thank you.

Thanks JS...I was thinking myself that I will request that he show me where
the crack is. I also went to the BBB website and this business has 14 recent
complaints and they have an unsatisfactory record with the Better Business
Bureau due to not responding to other complaints. I should have done my
homework first. What about the 21 days warranty? Is this standard? Thank you
for all the tips. MAC

The 21 days is way too short for new and still too short for used parts.
If you have him show you where the crack is also look for and identify if
each fan (CPU, Case, Power Supply) is running.

Also for about the same price or 100 dollars more than you are going to pay
for the repair you can get either a new or refurbished system from Dell. New
systems have a one year or more warranty, refurbs come with (I could not
find out this information, Dell way impossible to deal with on the phone and
after two calls gave up, might want to look at another brand) day warranty.

Cannot thank you enough. You have given me info so at least I have a place
to start. You certainly have re-inforced my attitude toward mankind. I seldom
say that we live in such a selfish society, but the time you have spent
helping a total stranger is so valuable to me. Hope you have a great
Thanksgiving. What comes around go around so I hope your generosity will be
rewarded some day. I will let you know the outcome of this.

Good luck and have a happy turkey day also.
I'll monitor this post for a while so if need any more help let me know.
