erm...

I'm looking for some constructive comments m8 - I can't really glean
anything from yours? Are you saying that it's the norm to wait 5 secs for
each page to load with IE6 while the CPU's max'd. It sort of seems a waste of
money to have a fast broadband connection if you have to live with this
bottleneck.

Anyway, its a bit of a pain waiting for the browser page to load each time -
I browse about 1,000 pages a day so every second saved saves me 15mins

I just upgraded my ram from 192 to 750 and that reduced the wait from about
15 secs to 5 secs

things were ok was on w2000 but I've recently moved to XP...

I'm thinking of putting a powerleap from 450Mhz to 1.3Ghz to see if it helps.

What do others apart from Frank get with their setup and browsing speeds
please?

Hi Frank - can't really see what help you're providing Frank? If you browse
1,000 pages a day you'll soon see that every sec saved is a Good Thing

On W2000 it wasn't too bad but has slowed since I moved to XP

I was getting 15 secs on XP until I upgraded my RAM from 192 to 750M

I'm thinking of upgrading CPU with a Powerleap to 1.3Gb from 450M

Anyone else apart from Frank think 5 secs is the best you're going to do
with browsing on IE6?

It takes me about 3 sec on IE6 WinXP Home, 512meg mem - dual channel DDR,
nVidia chipset w/ graphics w/ Athlon 2200. I require a complete refresh on
each visit, your result might be better if you can live with cached pages.
If your cache is large your speed may suffer as well - so clean it
regularly.

Theoretical speed from cable is about 6000 kbits - about 700 Kbytes ( 1 byte
= 8 bits ) - with packet information and buffers, etc - you get about 660
Kbytes thru a really clean connection. Any problem with the connection and
this drops FAST. Test your connection to make sure it is optimal. Oh, and I
believe DSL is more in the range of 1500-2200 kbits - about 200 Kbytes. So
if your page is 1 meg it would take 5 sec. Distance form the local switch
can also have a significant impact.

300 baud (my 1st machine) got about 30 bytes per second. So a 1 meg page
would take a little over 9 HOURS! If you wanted to see 1,000 such pages it
would take about a year - so count your blessings.

If you have DSL and you are not getting 200 Kbytes look carefully at your
wiring. A bad connection in DC is easy as any moisture brings corrosion. A
mismatched twisted pair is also a common plague.

Some time at anadtech or tomshardware might be useful to you as well. Map
the information as it flows from the source, go step by step, and you may
find several bottlenecks - memory is only one such.

Oh, and be nice to Frank - he might even know VASTLY more than either you or
I.

I have a 1.7 GHz processor and 512 MB RAM. I often have to wait 5 or more
seconds, especially when connected via dial-up. As far as 100% processor
usage, I don't really know any measuring program I really trust. And if you
are not using 100% you're wasting some of its capability.

Thanks for the info - big help

Its got me thinking more about the connection than cpu. I did a test on the
web and I'm averaging 600kbps out of a 750k connection.

The pages I'm browsing are about 150k and hop down 14 IPs. Theyre in the US
and I'm in the UK. I tried stripping a few things out of IE e.g. don't force
a refresh, disable ActiveX addins. I disabled all the Multimedia options e.g.
hide pictures etc and this got the page size down to 100k. Having said that
it didn't make a scrap of difference to the 5 secs...

I use Microsoft Web Browser embedded in Access 2002 - thought this might be
a problem but I get the same performance in IE6 standalone (and Firefox!)

I can upgrade bandwidth to 1.5mbps for £13 more per month- worth the money?

Cheers

Just in case anyone else has a prob, I found that my PC couldn't cope with
upgrading from W2000 to XP e.g. 5 sec wait for browser pages. Solution was to
upgrade CPU from 450Mhz to 1.3Ghz with a really cool Powerleap. Now flitting
around is a piece of cake.
