Excel Countif formula employees who retire before 01/04/2018

Can someone help me with regard to the formula to determine the total number of employees who retire before 01/04/2018, by using COUNTIF in excel?

Sorry for the delayed response.

Retiring on/before 4-jan-2018

=COUNTIF(B2:B21,"<=4-jan-2018")

Retiring before 4-jan-2018

=COUNTIF(B2:B21,"<4-jan-2018")
