Could it have been only a Test?

Before you think I'm crazy, as well as paranoid, here me out.

In my last 2 posts to BillS and Tom I indicated that
if I wanted to ATTACK the WD Newsgroup this is the way I would do it,
only I'd be even sneaker about it.

At this point it was 6:00PM Chicago Time and I needed to log off.
It was time for my KungFu rerun! I also had a glass of Sherry.

Now, you must understand Grasshopper, nothing makes Tim more reflective than
watching KungFu and drinking Sherry.
It is like seeing the inner mind on the open sea and realizing they are one.

Anyway, so I'm in this "What would I do if..." mindset and it occurs to me,
"What would I do If I wanted to TEST the WD Newsgroup?"

Think about it, MS or someone doing a study, could set up a web site
and post a link that "should" arose suspicion,
especially in a security savvy place like the WD Newsgroup,
just to see what would happen.

I think its' called Social Engineering or something like that

"How many people would question it?"
They could tell from our posts.
"How many people would go to the site?"
Weblogs could them.
"How many people would actually allow the file to download?
Weblogs could tell them.
"Could they determine that the file was harmless?
They could tell from our posts.
"If they determine that the file is harmless and perhaps even useful,
how many would back down from their suspicions? how many would stand their
ground?"
They could tell from our posts.
"If in five days we change the file to a harmless "gotcha" will people still
be downloading it?"
They could tell from our posts and their logs.

If I wanted to TEST the group this would be how I would do it.
Think about it!?!

Ah, Grasshopper, sometimes your thoughts are too deep even for me,
and sometimes you are just plain crazy! Go have another Sherry and bring me
one.

I've had such thoughts at times. There's just sufficient background to make
me think that the download (and the site) is perfectly legitimate--just not
"mainstream". It is really the act of referring someone to it which is the
dangerous action. (none of which really speaks to your basic thought....)
