Cost of Vista

Can anyone in the community explain as to why the cost of Vista here in the
UK is up to 3 times the equivilent cost in the US. (e.g. Vista Ultimate
£369.99 compared to £138 ($260).) I cannot see there being a difference in
production or content of the discs so where does the extra cost come from?

I'm sure there are other members who think the same

It's simple. U. The letter U is extraordinarily expensive. They must
raise the cost of Vista to cover all the extra Us. Now, if you would
start spelling words like honor and color correctly, you could have a
significantly cheaper price.

I'm entirely serious.

Corel is exactly the same. It's a shame. When XP was released, the price was
comparatively simpler, even with the rather different £:$ exchange rate that
was effective then!

I can get it in Canada for $299.99 CDN ($253.16 USA)
I bought the Home Premium upgrade for $169.99 CDN ($143.45 USA).

The best thing to do (if you don't mind a few days extra wait and the
possibility it might never arrive if it gets lost), is to order from a
website based in America!

I live in the UK and found that I could order CD's from Amazon.com (America)
more cheaply (even with postage and packing) than from Amazon.co.uk!!!!

Unbelievable. It just shows how expensive and frankly ripped off we are in
the UK - It's cheaper to send exactly the same good from an entirely
different country than it be sent from within.

Ludicrous.

Or buy an OEM copy. I've done that and as far as I'm concerned I'll never
buy retail again. I don't need a fancy box or Microsoft support and my PC is
new so won't need to upgrade. OEM is perfectly legit on mine and runs no
different from other licensing options (of course).

It's only £130 as opposed to £352 for retail.

That's patently false (remember, you stated you are entirely serious)!

Canadians use the same spelling scheme concerning the "u" as the British do
(as in Favourite, Colour, Favour, etc). Even then, that variation is used in
so few words that your claim that is the reason for the price increase is
ridiculous. Consider this also, some Canadian online retailers are selling
Vista versions cheaper there than they are here in the U.S.

We also use the extra U in Canada where I can get Vista cheaper than in the
USA at least with regard to suggested retail pricing.
By the way, spelling without the extra U is an acceptable form of the
spelling, so it just gives us more options.
Newspapers however add the extra U because of "political" reasons, a small
subset of the community are not aware that not using the extra U is a proper
spelling and they get very upset when they see words like color not spelled
as colour.

Maybe it's Microsoft's way of thumbing their nose at the EU for all the
hassle it's
given Microsoft!

You probably also need to factor in the cost of switching the "er" the other
way around in words like "theatre" etc.

However this doesn't explain why prices aren't slightly higher in Canada. Or
are they?

Who do you think is paying the several EU fines that were levied against Microsoft?

And your proof for this assertion is? Or are you just making it up as
you go along? Many have stated this bias against the EU but no one has
provide one iota of proof.

Common sense. If a government penalizes me because they want to protect a
couple of native businesses, and the people of that county support that
decision - by electing the decision makers to office - then I've been
accused and convicted of being a rogue and a blackguard.

Might as well reap the benefits of being a scoundrel.

That's not the reason, it's the extra waterproofing and insulation
they have to do to Vista for it to survive the trip over there.

Or, Microsoft doesn't like Dr. Who...

No no no, you see, Canada is simply a province of the US, the spelling
differences are attributed to a dialectical difference..... (Canada
being a very large, underpopulated, mostly blue state, save for the
county of Alberta)....

It couldn't be trying to recoup all of the fines that the EU "fairness in
competition" board is imposing, now could it?

No, Msoft has a better plan, allow Russia to continue with pirated
versions in exchange for a piece of the oil prices that Russia will
charge the EU so the EU can say, unlike the US, they are not dependent
on Middle East oil and but instead obtain their fuel from a democratic
country.
