XP to Vista upgrade & UK cost

I preordered a full retail copy of XP/HE back in 2001. I intended to use it
as the base for future upgrades.

1/. Can I upgrade from this to Vista? I emailed MS UK but got no reply. I
would really like to go to Vista Ultimate, but..

2/. The full retail cost of Ultimate in the UK will be about £330. Yes, the
current equivalent of about $600 !!! (Amazon.co.uk)

That's an unconscionable mark-up over US prices. Why so much?

I might be prepared to fork out an upgrade price which would probably be
about £200, might.

Unless you need Windows for business use and all the so called other bits
that Ultimate has from Vista Business version then Home premium is the one
to go for.
On the Vista website compare the two side by side.
Ultimate is just Premium with the "best"bits from Business.
Also regarding the price over here and in the states........
The cost of Vista in the states does not include any taxes, all American
prices are shown before tax.
"Suggested retail price for full package product, $399.00 "
That's around £200 or so at the min.
At the min I use XP Pro, not because of the so calle security and other bits
that XP Home does not have but because I had the chance to have it.
So for me Premium will do everything that XP Home does right now or XP Pro
without using the"extra bits".
Vista Premium will cost around £230 and around &£199 for the upgrade(using
an XP disk as proof(clean install)
You then get exactly the same as the full Vista Premium.
Vista whatever version upgrade and "full"are exactly the same.
It's how you install them.

In the states Premium will cost around $239 less tax for the"full"version
and that's around £125

Regarding "upgrade"..........
1.If you are using XP Home right now then you should be able to pay for
Vista upgrade and boot XP up, put the Vista DVD in and it should let you
upgrade(over)XP(I think).
2.I don't know if the upgrade Vista DVD will let you clean install using XP
disk as proof of having XP.
Maybe the only way to upgrade is from inside XP.

Yes. The upgrade version is here

but doesn't yet have a price on it.

Remember to take into account that our sales tax is included in the price,
in the US it's added on top. Other than that, good question. I'd like to
know too.

I assume you mean you have an uninstalled licensed version of XP/HE, if so,
you will be able to use it for upgrade. According to some information from
Microsoft, you will have to have your XP system installed as you will not be
able to use the CD for verification. Seems that an installed and activated
version is now necessary even for a clean install, so you need plenty of
disk space.

How can you do a clean install from within XP?
IF you put the dvd in while running XP ALL you will get is the upgrade
choice(upgrade over XP)

Nero:
Every installation that I've done while running XP or XP x64 have
had the option of a clean installation and most times the upgrade is grayed
out.
