Presumably you DO have Word (or a compatible application such as Open
Office) installed on your machine?
What happens if you save the attachment to your HDD first?

And secondly what is the extension of these attachments? Is it .docx and
you have Word 2003 or earlier?

I have Microsoft Office Word 2007 installed and it works OK.
I saved the received document in "Documents" and when opened it was the same
gobbly gook.
Sorry, I cannot ascertain if it is .docx.

If it is a .docx file, Word 2007 will handle it effortlessly.

SORRY BUT the problem still exists!!! Any other ideas???

Step 1: Forward it to another computer and determine if the document
is corrupt or your computer has a problem.

Maybe you have a virus or maybe your Word is corrupt.

Uninstall Word and reinstall.

Make sure your antivirus definitions are up to date then do a system scan.

Despite all the responses I received (none of which worked and some became
rather childish), my son advised me that I must use Adobe reader to open such
a file with VISTA.

1. Right click on the insert in the email.
2. Save as "....." in documents
3. Go to "Documents"
4. Find what you have just saved.
5. Scroll to "Open with"
6. Right click on Adobe.

I still consider VISTA a load of crap.

Why ever not? Can't you just look at the full file name? And, if you
don't know the file extension, which is what identifies the file type,
what makes you thing it's a Word document to start with?

Then it obviously was *not* a Word document to start with. It's a good
thing you son knows enough about computers to help you.

1. Right click on the insert in the email.
2. Save as "....." in documents
3. Go to "Documents"
4. Find what you have just saved.
5. Scroll to "Open with"

How does your clearly demonstrated lack of computer and/or software
knowledge lead you to conclude that Vista is crap. "It's a poor workman
