Corrupted picture files and xp slideshow

i have corrupted bmp and jpeg files i cannot open. xp will show
slideshow thumbs of the pictures and show them on the parent folder.
how does xp do this if i cannot open them? somehow xp is reading the
data though the headers are bad. i have tried several picture rescue
programs to no avail.
 
Have you tried irfanview?
The thumbnail you can see may be associated with the folder, or may be the
entire readable contents of the picture file.
