XP default viewer corrupts my jpg images on my Memory card.

Dear Support,
I returned from holiday and attached the card reader to my XP laptop, and
before copying the files to the HDD, I opened them to take a look at them.
Later, to my surprise, the files that I had opened and previewed had all the
header files removed, and now I cannot open them with anything! I have tried
several recovery programs, but cannot get the pictures to open. I have spent
days trying to recover the pictures. The data is contained in the files, and
they do have content, but they cannot be read by any sotware. Is there any
possibility to recover the corrupted files somehow? Thank you.

Did the file names change?

Are the files still on your memory card?

Did you try recovering the files from your
memory card?

Can you view them on the camera's LCD?
