How do I take a large group of picture files in a My Pictures subfolder and
arrange them to be a random slideshow without having to rotate the order of
copies one by one manually? Or is this even possible?

Try the freeware IrfanView:

Download IrfanView
http://www.tucows.com/preview/194967
(get the plug-ins too)
http://www.tucows.com/preview/415586

When you have the program downloaded
and installed...go to...File / Slideshow.

Select the folder that contains the images...
Click the 'Add all' button...

Tick...Random...

Click...Save as EXE....

On the Save screen...enter a save location
and a name for the file...

Tick...Create EXE / Create.

When I downloaded the program and copied my files, it did convert my pics
into a slideshow. But I can do that with my picture and fax viewer. I was
trying to randomize the order of the files, so as to have a random slideshow.
Plus the green writing with the file names in the top of the pictures was a
little unattractive.

Did you tick the random box?

The green file names can be disabled
by unchecking the "Show Text" box.

Pardon me for living.
