corrupted devmgr.dll file

How do I install a good copy of the device manager without having to reload
all of the Windows XP

R

Devmgr.dll is a protected system file. There will be a backup copy in the
C:\Windows\System32\dllcache folder. Copy this file to the
C:\Windows\System32 folder and let it overwrite the corrupted copy.

Hello Ronnie and thank you for your help.
I should note here that I am running Windows XP Pro SP2.
I do not have a sub-folder in the System32 folder named dllcache.dll. Nor
will my
computer allow me to create on. The computer reports that the file already
exists but I have been unable to find it.

Any further suggestions? I'm wide open for some ideas.

OK, that was a quick fix that apparently did not work. :(

Give us some details about the problem and what is going on with the device manager. Remember, we cannot see you're monitor, so be very detailed.

You need to perform some troubleshooting steps to try and locate exactly where the problem is coming from.

Check the Event Viewer for possible information. Go to start/Run and type eventvwr and press OK. Click the Application menu item on the left and look for any "X" error messages that coincide with when you last saw this behavior. If any are found, double click the error entry to see the details, click the Copy Icon on the right side of the details dialog screen (looks like 2 pages of text) and paste the error details in a reply to this message. You only need to post the text starting with Event Type: and ending with the Description:. You can omit the Data section.

ie:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: <source>
Event Category: <category>
Event ID: <ID #>
Date: <date>
Time: <time>
User: <user name>
Computer: <computer name>
Description:
Hanging application <program>, <version>, <address>

----

Next:
Go to Start/Run and type msinfo32 and press OK. Click Components/Problem Devices to check for possible hardware device problems. If anything is visible in this window, copy the information and post it in a reply. (Press CTRL+A to select all, then CTRL+C to copy, paste the results in a reply here.

----

Open Control Panel and double click the System icon. Click the Advanced tab, look in the Startup and Recovery section and press the Settings button. In the System Failure section, remove the check mark from the Automatically Restart option. Apply/OK.

This will allow any blue screen error messages to be displayed. If you do see a blue screen "STOP" error, always write down the first line of the message and post that information here.

Thanks again for your quick response Ronnie,
As you suggested I have copied one of the MANY errors in the report. I also
copied 2 of the information entries that may offer further clues. I need to
note here that apparently these errors have been occuring for nearly a year
but have only now become a problem for me.

I REALLY need to get my CD Drive working so I ever so humbly appreciate your
help.

Best Regards,
Maverick (Pete)

Hello Ronnie,
Good news, my cd drive works. Bad news, my device manager does not work.
I have tried reinstalling files from my XP-Pro CD (original) but the
AutoStreamer I am using does not recognize my CD. The service pack was
installed directly off the the Windows Update web site so I don't have the
file I need for the AutoStreamer
to combine with the XP-Pro CD. I tried downloading the SP-2 pack from a
Microsoft
site but the AutoStreamer does not recognize either of the two SP-2 files I
downloaded.
Do you have any suggestions?

Regards,
Maverick (Pete)

Go to MVP Kelly's website. Scroll down to line 107, right side and click the "Restore Device Manager" link to download the file. Right click the downloaded file and select Merge to install the fix.

Hello Ronnie and thanks for the help,
However, I still get the error message about not being able to find the
devmgr.dll file. I actually tried this before, even used the "regsvr32
devmgr.dll" keyed into the Run field.
Based upon some other help I got from another source, I created a CD with
the XP-pro and the SP2 together. However, my computer does not recognize it
as an original MS CD.

Any other suggestions will be appreciated.

Hello Ronnie,
One more comment on my previous email;
The file that was created was a self extracting .exe. That probably
explains why my computer doesn't recognize this CD as an original MS disc.

To run sfc /scannow I need to make a disc that combines the original
installation CD with the SP2. How do I do that?

Hello Again Ronnie,
Once again thank you for your help. However, I used the AutoStreamer you
suggested to create my first CD. Just in case I did something wrong the
first time I burned another one using the same process, and I got the same
result; the CD is not recognized as an original installation CD. Maybe I'm
not using it correctly so here is what I have been doing;
1. I use the AutoStreamer to combine the SP2 with my Original XP CD.
2. I burn a new CD using NERO that came with my new drive
3. I try running sfc /scannow and insert the CD as instructed.
4. The error message appears almost instantly that this is NOT the original
CD.

Am I doing something wrong here?

This is getting really frustrating, what other words of wisdom can you
offer? I'll try anything at this point.

Regards,
Maverick ( Pete)

The easiest way to slipstream an installation CD is to use Autostreamer. It's available here:

Let me know if this solves the problem.
