Corrupt system file

Windows is saying the System file is corrupt. The
emergency recovery disk cannot be located. Is there any
option short of reinstalling and losing all of the data?
 
- Please quote the exact error message
- How far does the boot process go?
- Is Win2000 installed on a FAT or on an NTFS partition?
