Corrupt File

Hi,

I recently discivered that I have a file that is corrupt
or missing and I can not launch WIN2K at all. I didnt make
a "emergency repair disk" and it is asking for it.

I dont know what to do and I dont want to lose all my data.

Would someone please reply to thgis post and let me know
what I can do to recover my data without having to
reinstall WIN2k?

The file that is missing is
\WINNT\SYSTEM\vgaoem.fon

As I said when I start my machine and as WINDOWS is trying
to start up I get a screen saying the above mentioned file
is corrupt or missing and should try to repair it. When I
go to WINDOW SETUP and try to repair it , is asks for the
Emergency Repair Disk". I didnt make one or start up disk!!

PLEASSSSSSSSE HELPPP!!! It would be greatly
appreciated.!!!!

Have a great day !

If this OS was installed from a win2k CD, just re-install
a new copy over itself, be carefull not to format your
system. It reads your current registry and overlaps win2k.
Make sure your system is off, put in the CD into the cd-
rom and boot it from the cd, it should state that it
already has an OS installed and you should get an option
to re-install. Do not forget to do your updates afterwards.

Good luck.

Damin,

You can try getting the font file from another computer, put it on your boot disk ( or get a
bootdisk from www.bootdisk.com for 98se and add the font to the files), and from an NT
Command line "type"

a: <enter>
( after, your prompt will be a:\> )
"type"
copy a: vgaoem.fon c:\winnt\system\vgaoem.fon
"type" exit <enter>

Change your boot order back in the BIOS
try to boot; you may have other files corrupt.
If so, you can try a "repair" from command console.
Just go into the BIOS (When first start posting tap, tap, tap the "delete" key
Look for 1st boot order and change it to "CD-ROM", exit saved.
Pop the Windows 2000 CD in tray.
Reboot
At install choose "R" for repair and choose the recovery console (I assume you do not have
an ERD)
If it all goes well and you can boot normally, please go to "Backup" and choose make an ERD.

Use the Windows Recovery Console to extract the Vgaoem.fon file from the
Windows 2000 compact disc to the Windows\System folder on your computer's
hard disk. To do this, follow these steps:
1. Configure your computer to start from the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive.
2. Insert the Windows 2000 compact disc into your computer's CD-ROM or
DVD-ROM drive, and then restart your computer.
3. When the "Press any key to boot from CD" dialog box is displayed,
press a key to start your computer from the Windows 2000 compact disc.
4. When the Welcome to Setup screen is displayed, press R to start the
Recovery Console. Then C for recovery console.
5. If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot system, select the installation
that you need to access from the Recovery Console.
6. When you are prompted, type the Administrator password, and then press
ENTER.
7. At the command prompt, type "map" (without the quotation marks), and
then press ENTER.
8. Type the following line, and then press ENTER (where <CD-ROM drive> is
the letter of the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive that contains the Windows 2000
compact disc, and <drive> is the letter of the drive on which Windows is
installed):

"expand < CD-ROM drive>:\i386\vgaoem.fo_ <drive>:\windows\system"
(without the quotation marks)
For example, type the following:
"expand d:\i386\vgaoem.fo_ c:\windows\system" (without the quotation
marks)
Note the underscore character after the "o" in "Vgaoem.fo_".
