Corrupt Profile

I've had problems with my computer turning itself back on after I shut down. Occasionally we just hit the power button for five seconds to do a hard shutdown.

Now my main user profile is corrupt, and I cannot get into the directories to get any of the two years worth of files stored there. "Access is denied" when on another admin user account, and there is no way that I can find using some of the XP support options to get into these files, copy the user profile data, or anything, to a new user profile. Properties for the folder comes up with
c:\documents and settings\Kim Knapp is not accessible. Access is denied

When attempting to use the Security / Sharing tab, the message received is

An error occurred while trying to share Kim Knapp. Access is denied. The shared resource was not created at this time

I've also tried going in at the CMD level, with no success

Thanks for any help you might be able to provide

HOW TO: Take Ownership of a File or Folder in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308421

For this to work, you have to be logged in as administrator (or in XP
Home, in Safe Mode) and you have to check the setting in Windows
Explorer > Foder Options > View > Enable simple file sharing.

Wow, I wish I'd known about that! It would have been worth a try, as I
once ended up reformatting and reinstalling (always a matter of days
worth of time) when I had a similar problem and access message.

Hi john,

Well, now you know the steps to take if a similar problem comes up and
you won't have to reformat.

Hope this helps
