I've been having problems defragmenting my laptop (Acer Travelmat
534XCi); getting the message:

"Disk Defragmenter cannot continue prescan because there is a
corruption in file: C:\Documents and
Settings\Demo User\Local Settings\Temporary Internet
Files\Content\IE5\QUYSUK99"

I've tried running check disc but when I select the 'fix problems
option I get the message that exclusive access to Windows files and
should schedule the task to be performed when I restart. I have sai
'yes' to this but nothing appears to happen on restart!

I've tried running 'cleanmgr' to clear the Temporary Internet Files an
Temporary files but this hasn't helped.

I also installed Registrybot hoping it would solve the problem. Sadly
I'm still getting the same message.

Is there something I'm doing wrong? Can anyone suggest a solution

The folder QUYSUK99 is one of the four random named folders that gets
created in
%userprofile%\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5

To delete *all* of your Temporary Internet Files...

1) Start | Run | Type: inetcpl.cpl | Click OK
Or right click the Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop
Or Start | Settings | Control Panel | Internet Options
Best to do this with all instances of Internet Explorer closed. Especially
if there are a large number of files. Also close OE.
2) On the General Tab, in the middle of the screen, click on Delete Files
3) Check the box: Delete all offline content {This cleans >>
%userprofile%\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files
AND
%userprofile%\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5
and \Content.MSO (Created by an MS Office program)}
4) Click on OK and wait for the hourglass icon to stop after it deletes the
temporary internet files
5) You can now click on Delete Cookies and click OK to delete cookies that
websites have placed on your hard drive.
6) You can also click on the Clear History button to empty your History
folder.

Note: If you do NOT select the Delete all offline content box, not
everything will be cleaned out.

Content.IE5 is a hidden folder.

1) Start | Run | Type: inetcpl.cpl | OK
2) On the General Tab, in the middle of the screen, click on Delete Files
3) Click on OK and wait for the hourglass icon to stop after it deletes the
temporary internet files
{This cleans >> C:\Documents and Settings\YourNameHere\Local
Settings\Temporary Internet Files}
4) On the General Tab, in the middle of the screen, click on Delete Files
{Yes, one more time!!!}
5) Check the box Delete all offline content
{This cleans >> C:\Documents and Settings\YourNameHere\Local
Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5}
6) Click on OK and wait for the hourglass icon to stop after it deletes the
temporary internet files
7) You can now click on Delete Cookies and click OK to delete cookies that
websites have placed on your hard drive.

To clear the Internet History in IE:
1) Open Internet Explorer and click on Tools
2) Click on Internet Options
3) On the General Tab, in the middle of the screen, click on Clear History
4) Click OK

Cheers for that Wesley, very prompt!

Sadly I've tried all that and no luck... I'm still getting the same
message when I try to defrag. Any other suggestions?

Thanks again, it's nice to know someone cares!

Try this.

Make sure that Outlook Express and all instances of Internet Explorer are
closed. There are other applications that store files in Temporary Internet
Files as well, but those are the main ones.

Paste the following line into Start | Run and click OK...

%userprofile%\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5

Now delete however many folders that you see. Click Yes to the "Are you
sure..." message that will popup.

If you see a desktop.ini and index.dat, just leave those files alone.

Time to run Error Checking or chkdsk.exe.

Chkdsk creates and displays a status report for a disk based on the file
system. Chkdsk also lists and corrects errors on the disk.

Detecting and repairing disk errors:
You can use the Error-checking tool to check for file system errors
and bad sectors on your hard disk.

Run Error Checking | Reboot | Try to empty the Temporary Internet Files
again.

1. In My Computer or Windows Explorer, right-click the volume you want to
check, and then click Properties.
2. On the Tools tab, click Check Now.
3. Select both of these:

* Automatically fix file system errors
* Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors

A message will popup.

[[The disk check could not be performed because the disk check utility needs
exclusive access to some Windows files on the disk. These files can be
accessed only by restarting Windows. Do you want to schedule this disk check
to occur the next time you restart the computer?]]

Click YES.

You have to reboot for Error-checking to run.

Then reboot.

For a peek at the chkdisk log.
Start | Run | Type: eventvwr | OK
Look in Application | Listed as Information
under Winlogon, Event 1001

[[Description: This includes file system type; drive letter or GUID, and
volume name or serial number to help determine what volume Chkdsk ran
against. Also included is whether Chkdsk ran because a user scheduled it or
because the dirty bit was set.]]

Hi Wesley

Followed your instructions but check disk does not appear to run on
restart! Computer just starts as normal!

Also tried running check disk from RUN. Typed chkdisk /f but got the
message;

"The type of file system is FAT32.
Cannot lock current drive.

Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process.
Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the
system restarts? Y/N"

Again I said yes, but again nothing happened on restart.

Any idea what is happening? What can I try next?

Thanks, Tim

We are having all kinds of opportunities here aren't we?

After you schedule chkdsk and reboot, if you get one of these messages:

Cannot lock volume for direct access
or
Cannot open volume for direct access

<quote>
This problem occurs because the Chkdsk.exe utility or the Autochk.exe
utility could not lock the partition. This problem can occur if another
utility or service, such as a virus checker program or a disk monitoring
program, locks the partition before you try to run the Chkdsk.exe utility or
the Autochk.exe utility.
<quote>

There are several things that can cause the problem.

Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition 9.0 can cause the problem.

Chkdsk.exe or ScanDisk fails to run on Windows XP or Windows 2003 after
installing Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition 9.0

2d79c84c363973488256ea600542b5a

A program called Hitman Pro can cause the problem.

A really old version of ZoneAlarm (a version from 2004) can cause the
problem.

BitDefender Internet Security 9 can cause the problem.

[[Ok BitDefender live support told me yesterday that they are working on it
and sending people analyse tools but she didn't send me one.....]]
from...
(e-mail address removed) 21 May 2006

Spyware Doctor can also cause the problem.

The /x switch doesn't work if Spyware Doctor is installed. Spyware Doctor
needs to be uninstalled or you can do this...

Quoted from *PCTools*, *Spyware* *Doctor*...
1. Exit from Spyware Doctor (to exit from Spyware
Doctor please right click on the Spyware Doctor icon in
the notification area (next to the clock on the Windows
taskbar) and select Exit from the menu that appears)

2. Delete the file
ikhlayer.sys from %windir%\system32\drivers\
or
from c:\windows\system32\drivers\

3. Restart Spyware Doctor

Chkdsk, defrag and error-checking should now work.

The /x switch doesn't work if file system is FAT32, so I won't go into that
here because you have FAT32.

This can sometimes work.

Schedule chkdsk and reboot in Safe Mode.

The way to do that in this instance is to use the msconfig method.

Start | Run | Type: msconfig | Click OK |
BOOT.INI tab | Under Boot Options select: /SAFEBOOT

The /SAFEBOOT switch causes Windows to start in Safe Mode.

After making those boot.ini changes using msconfig, you need to click Apply
and Close.

Then click on: Restart.

See if chkdsk runs correctly.

Then before you shutdown or reboot again, open msconfig...

UNSelect: /SAFEBOOT under the boot.ini tab | Click Apply |
Under the General tab Select: Normal Startup - load all device drivers and
services | Click Apply and Close

[[Message 1
