COPY XP TO A LARGER HARD DRIVE

WE HAVE A 5 USER LICENSE FOR XP PROFESSIONAL, WE UPDATED TO SP-2, 2 OF OUR
COMPUTERS HAVE SMALL HARD DRIVES ( 30 GIGS ). WE NEED TO GOTO A LARGER HARD
DRIVE. ALL OUR DRIVES ARE WESTERN DIGITIAL BRAND. I PURCHASED NEW 80 GIG HARD
DRIVES TO INSTALL INTO THESE MACHINES. WE ARE KEEPING THE OLD 30 GIG DRIVES,
I THEN TRIED CLONING THE OLD DRIVE TO THE NEW DRIVE WITH NORTON GHOST,
EVERYTHING WENT OK IN THE CLONING PROCESS. NOW THE PROBLEM...WHEN I
INSTALLED THE NEW CLONED 80 GIG HARD DRIVE AND BOOTED THE SYSTEM UP, I GOT
THE " BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH " WITH A MESSAGE SAYING SOMETHING ABOUT NEW
HARDWARE AND TO UNINSTALL IT AND TRY AGAIN.. TRIED NUMERIOUS TIMES BUT NEW
DRIVE WILL NOT BOOT UP.

DOES ANYBODY KNOW WHAT IS WRONG ?? HELP, DO NOT WANT TO DO CLEAN INSTALL &
RELOAD ALL PROGRAMS..

Was the file system FAT32 or NTFS? If it was fat32 you are going to need
to change to NTFS before moving to 80GB.

Clone one of the original drives to one of the 80GB ones, keep the same
30GB size when you do it, leave the remainder of the 80GB drive unused.

Install the 80GB Drive (30GB clone) and boot up, it should work.

From a DOS box type CONVERT C: /FS:NTFS and press enter
this will mark the drive to be converted from FAT32 to NFTS which
supports the larger drives

Reboot as requested, wait for it to convert, check windows to make sure
it's working, shutdown.

Ghost the drive to 2'nd 80GB drive, make the drive use all space.

Boot from the 80GB (all 80GB) and make sure it works

Ghost the 80GB to the other 80GB and you're done.

Just convert 30Gb to NTFS and then clone it.

Just convert 30Gb to NTFS and then clone it.

he may not have enough room, and he may not want to risk doing a convert
and "possibly" loosing the only copy of the data.

I see you do know where the caps lock key is as you have signed your message
in lower case. Lose the caps, it's considered yelling, is incredibly rude,
and makes your posts very hard to read.

thanks for the reply, but i do not want to change to "ntfs", if i clone on
the same machine that the new hard drive will be installed on, i do not have
a problem...it is only when i do 2 drives on the same computer cloning that
the one drive going into a different machine, that i get the blue screen..the
80gig size is not the problem.

You will have to clone each computer unless the computer hardware is
identical.
There may also be a problem with the EULA.

Problem #1 - your CAPS LOCK key is stuck. That probably reduces your
chances of getting a response by more than 50%. Who needs the
eyestrain?

Problem #2 - In order to give you any advice about an error message it
is essential that you provide the complete *verbatim* text of that
message including all of the parameters.

A possible solution to your problem would be to boot the computer with
your Windows XP CD and choose the Repair (Recover Console) option from
the initial boot menu. When the computer has finished booting and
stops at the command prompt enter the following command:

CHKDSK /R

and see if that resolves the problem.

Note: during this procedure make sure that the original 30 gb hard
drive has been removed or at least disconnected (power and data
cables). No need to further complicate the issue by having two XP
installs to choose from.

Good luck
