i have a win2k domain controler on an IDE box which i now
wish to move to a nice shiny new DELL server with a PERC
3 raid controler ive done a backup from my ide box and of
corse it wont boot after restoriny to the dell i have
asumed it would be the same if i ghost it so how do i
move this from one box to the other without having to
rebuild it all (the dell has no ide drive capability )

Hi Phil-

Cloning AD Domain Controllers is not recommended. I would simply install W2K
fresh on your new Dell Server. Once installed, promote to a DC and you're
done.

Buid the new box from the ground up. You could copy or ghost, but the
hardware changes are so significant that you'd have a nightmare getting the
drivers straightened out cleanly. Also, I suspect that there might be a
requirement for a HAL change, so the new box might not even boot up if you
just did a drive image.

Man is that hard to read !

Slept in the English class I see.

It's this strange phenomenon I often observe: Some people who
deal all day long with computers and who know full well how
particular computers are when it comes to spelling and syntax,
these same people often take the greatest liberties when it
comes to human languages.

You can't ghost a DC and much less ghost to disimilar hardware + a mass
storage controller. Reinstalling the operating system with F6 for mass
storage, joining + promoting is a fairly straight-forward operation. One
would think that attempting an operation like a DC ghost is a dangerous
endeavour in light of what it might cause to your domain. <Shudder>

Your ghosted DC would be asking itself some very strange questions like:
Why am i binding to a NIC that exists not?
Where the hell did the hard drive go, hmm, boot.ini?
What do you mean by "that SID already exists"?
Hey, you stole my FSMO role !!
So which one is SYSTEM#1, is it SYSTEM#1 or SYSTEM#1? Well?

I hope you've practiced your AD recovery procedures, you'll need them.
