copied .pst file now "not recognized"

I was moving to a new work site, and backed up all the files I needed to move
as a .pst file. When I got to the new computer and tried to open them,
outlook said something like "file not recognized as .pst file." I got back
to my original workstation and discovered that I had moved the .pst file
instead of copying it. I ran the scanpst utility, but this also said "the
inbox repair tool does not recognize the file, no information can be
recovered." How can I get some utility to at least pretend that my .pst file
is a .pst file long enough to recover at least some of my data.

I doubt you have this figured out correctly. It wouldn't matter whether you
moved or copied the file as long as you transferred it correctly. Those are
the relevant details you left out.
Exactly how did you move and transport this file? If you placed it on a
storage medium, did you remove its read only attribute?
