Microsoft Word Viewer is a freeware program that allows users who do not
own Microsoft Word to view and print documents that were created in Word:

Neither Windows XP Home Edition or Windows XP Professional
includes any Microsoft Office programs, such as Microsoft Word.

Microsoft Word is a program that you'll have to purchase.

Do you have Word on your XP computer? If so, use that to view the
file. If not there are several choices. WordPad may do an acceptible
job with the file. You could also download the free Word viewer
(http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/officeupdate/CD010225841033.aspx).
That will allow you to open and view the document, but not to update
it. You could also download Open Office (www.openoffice.org) a free,
open-source office suite. It also can open Word files.

Are you talking about opening a wps document created with MS Works on a 3.1
system? Or you talking about a doc document created on a 3.1 system? Do
you have Word installed on your system? If you are trying to convert a wps
document to a doc MS Works 2002 has the necessary converters as long as you
have Word installed. You might try the converter on the link provided but
that is only for converting Works 6 to Word. I have so many documents
created in Works on a 3.1 system that I just made a copy of the necessary
converters to always have.
