I converted a ppt slide into a gif picture but now picture is really blurry.
I need to place this in an advertisement, how do I make the picture sharper
or should I have saved it as something else?

I'd save as PNG rather than GIF. GIFs can only have 256 or fewer colors, which
won't do much for your pictures. PNGs can have millions of colors.

Then try some of the suggestions here:

Improve PowerPoint's GIF, BMP, PNG, JPG export resolution
http://www.pptfaq.com/FAQ00052.htm

If you use PPT 2002 or higher, be aware that the image exports ... um ... well
... suck. If the text looks like the pup's been chewing on it, that's what bit
you. And the text <g>.

The fix is to use one of the suggestions in the page above, export at higher
resolution that you really need, then downsample in any image editing program to
the final needed rez.

My suggestion would be to not export it. Instead, try a screen capture
program and grab a shot of it and process that. I use SnagIt from TechSmith.
With SnagIt, I can grab the screen at any resolution I need - that way, you
can get what you need for the advertisement without worrying about the icky
exports from PPT.
