convenient little nuisance

I just formatted and installed W XP SP2 due to some insurmountable
problems. In trying to personalize this new setup, I've made some
selections such as turning off the sounds on Windows start and shut
down etc.

Now it appears that these setting changes are not taking effect from
one day to the next. The next day I turn on this laptop and some of
the changes I made have disappeared and I have to make them all over
again.

I suspect that I am getting logged on as different users (although
I've tried to set this machine up to skip the logon screen). Maybe
I've screwed up with this convenient little nuisance feature of XP.
Can anyone give me a quick rundown on setting a machine up for one
user and bypassing the logon screen? I 'think' I'm logging on now as
the Administrator.
