Controlling Startup programs in Taskbar

Guest

I have just become aware of something I’m sure many musicians are already
aware of, and that is the issue of CPU usage when using VST plug-ins.

MY QUESTION IS…..

Is there a program that will allow me, on reboot to decide which programs
start in the taskbar and which don’t? My plan is to boot with all programs
under normal circumstances and only boot with needed programs when I’m doing
sequencing.

Any suggestions you have would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance for your help!

Hi Chaz,

Depending on where the programs load, you can use msconfig (Start, Run,
type msconfig and click OK) to uncheck items in the Startup folder and
certain services. Or you could download AutoRuns which is more extensive:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/Utilities/AutoRuns.mspx

You can create a shortcut on your Desktop for either of them to aid in
quickly launching them.

You will uncheck items that you don't want to load on next boot, or
check items to load on next boot.

Let us know if either of these serve your needs,

Use msconfig (Start/run/msconfig) is the easiest/simplest way

If you want more control:
Try Autoruns from the MS Windows SysInternals site:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/ProcessesAndThreads/Autoruns.mspx

AutoRuns will show/list all apps/etc. that load/run when you first boot
(Boot Execute tab),
when you logon (Logon tab) and other programs that load (grouped by labeled
tabs) for easy viewing.

It also provides the ability to selectively allows you to stop (use with
care) any program that you don't want to load. You can undo any changes you
have made.

Note: To get additional details on an item in the list you may need to
highlight the item (right click) and use the 'Search Online' option to get
the details, especially useful for the more obscure items in the list.

Added info:

See if this helps: Start/Run/Regedit

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig

Disable Unnecessary Programs at Startup

Start/Run/Regedit. Right Click/Delete unnecessary programs listed here:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Runonce
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Disable Run Commands Specified in the Registry

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
Policies\Explorer

Value Name: DisableLocalMachineRun, DisableLocalMachineRunOnce,
DisableCurrentUserRun, DisableCurrentUserRunOnce
Data Type: REG_DWORD (DWORD Value)
Value Data: (0 = enable run, 1 = disable run)

Create a new DWORD value for each of the optional values above depending on
which Run function to stop and set the value to "1" to disable. Restart
Windows for change to take effect.

Prioritize Your Programs:

Right-click the link to your favorite program on the Start menu and select
Pin to Start Menu. Your program will be moved permanently to the top part of
the list, just below your browser and e-mail programs.

You can tweak how you're applications run in xp by changing the priorty at
which they are run. This can dramatically increase the speed of the luna
theme and xp in general.

- Open TaskManager (Ctrl+Alt+Del or Ctrl+Shift+Esc)
- Goto the Processes tab
- Right Click Program- Set Priorty
- Set the application to the priorty of your choice.

There is a small program called startup delay that will do just what the
poster wanted. It is free and can be found here.

Just use msconfig
