control panel wont open

"windows explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close." i get this
message every time i try to open control panel it was working just fine a few
days ago but not now. i have run a virus scan, spybot, system restore and
adaware and nothing has helped. i cant send a support request to microsoft
because i cant get to my product identifacation number so i am at a stand
still untill someone responds. i will be happy to give any info that you need
to help me. thank you very much
