Control Panel Problems

I installed xp pro with sp1 and several hotfixes. The control panel does not
respond often. If I toggle between the new style and classic it is sure to
freeze. Any help would be appreciated. The Install is only 2 days old.

-- First, be sure your antivirus software has the latest definitions and run
a
virus scan.

Second, download, install and run Ad Aware:
www.lavasoftusa.com
Note: you should always be well backed up before running an application of
this type.

If your system is clear of viruses, open Control Panel, open System, go to
the Advanced tab, click Settings under Startup and Recovery, remove the
check from "Automatically Restart" under System Failure. This will cause
the system to blue screen instead of restarting on errors and the
information on the blue screen may give a clue as to the source of the
issue.

Open Control Panel, open Administrative Tools, open Event Viewer, look for
errors corresponding to the crash, double click the error, the information
contained within may give a clue as to the
source of the problem. If you don't understand the information inside, the
third button down in that dialog box will copy the information,
you can then paste it into a message and post it here and maybe we can
figure out what is going on.

Assuming you have an XP CD and not a recovery CD, place the XP CD in the
drive, when the setup screen appears, select "Check System Compatibility,"
the report it generates may point to problem hardware or software on your
system. If you do not have an XP CD, you can download this application
known as the Upgrade Advisor from the following site:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/howtobuy/upgrading/advisor.asp
Note: If you have access to a broadband connection it might be best to
download using that as this is a rather large download.

Check for the latest drivers for your hardware, especially your graphics
card and soundcard and all peripherals connected to your system. Do not use
Windows Update for this, go to the device manufacturer's web sites and if
you install updated drivers, ignore the message about drivers being unsigned
by Microsoft. *Before installing any drivers, be sure you are well backed
up and it's probably a good idea to manually create a restore point in
System Restore in case you have problems as a result of the driver update
and note, System Restore is not a substitute for a backup. Start\All
Programs\Accessories\System Tools\System Restore

Thanks for your reply, The event did not trigger a complete crash. Her are
some examples of the behavior, If I go to My Computer on desktop/control
panel the window opens with no text or icons and does not respond to
anything. If I go to start/control panel it opens up. It seems that when the
control panel is open and I try to use the left hand menu it stops
responding. It is like there is a conflict with using the two different
methods of window accessing.

When checking the event viewer I get these messages
Under Application- The shell stopped unexpectedly and explorer.exe was
restated. source:winlogon ID:1002
Under system_ The IMAP cd burning com service entered the stopped state.

Have you checked for malware and viruses as I initially suggested?

If clear, do you have CD burning software installed. If yes, what
application and what version? If this was an upgrade install over a
previous setup, was that software installed before the upgrade?

Yes, I did do a full virus scan and checked for spyware. The CD software is
Sonic MyDVD. It came with a lite-on conbo burner. It warned of a conflic
between the Intel application Accelerator(IAA) . I tried to find such a
thing on my system but found nothing. I have a Asus P4P800 SE mother board.

You might want to check the Sonic website for updates for the software.
Whatever the case, this is the probably cause of the error in the event log.

As to other issues you are having, I'd start by making sure the drivers for
your various devices are up to date, especially, your graphics card and
soundcard. You will need to check manufacturer websites for the latest XP
compatible drivers. Also, make sure you have any updates for software
installed on your system.

If you have a retail version of XP or an OEM that is a full version and not
a manufacturer's customized version, place it in the CD drive, when the
setup screen appears, select "Check System Compatibility." The report it
generates may point to potential sources of your issues.

I removed all the Sonic MyDVD software that came with the liteon burner and
the problem has stopped. Thank you for your help. Chris
