operate the desktop from the lap. the lap will be in a vocal booth in a
recording studio. a friend told me i could do this using an ethernet cable
connecting the two computers and configuring them with the connection wizard.
i got lost when i opened the connection wizard. can this even be done ?
maybe i need to connect through a serial or parallel port ? i was unable to
pull up the connection wizard on the lap with xp home ed.

Yes. Establish a network connection. Then use remote assistance to ask the laptop for help then give control to the laptop. You can use ethernet, serial, parallel, or USB to make a network connection.

Remote Assistance will show screen on both computers and take mouse and keyboard from the laptop untill someone presses escape (i think) key on the desktop.

Don't you want remote desktop (as against remote assistance)? That way the
second computer does not need anyone in attendance to initiate a connection
(just for the initial setup). Also, can remote desktop be used between XP
Home and XP Professional? I am believing that you need two instances of
Professional for remote desktop, but hey - I have been wrong before! (-:

The host machine must run WinXP Professional (or Win2000/2003
Server). The remote machine can run any flavour of Windows (well,
perhaps not Windows for Workgroups...)

Remote Desktop in netmeeting work between all MS's OSs since 95 (and maybe there were 3.1 versions too).

In fact I've not used XP at all and use Netmeeting as I don't assume XP to XP only. Type Conf in Start Run. Although I used a lot of terminal server on 2000 server (from 2000 clients).

You can use RA in either XP's one or Netmeeting (where is called Shared Desktop I think). Again I've only used NM's.

Could be a terminology thing but I wouldn't use the word control to describe RD. I use the term terminal server with a concept of merely running the code on a remote CPU. But I've recieved a lot of MS propaganda over the years about clients running code on servers (so they can rent software). So I thought RA was closest.

Anyway I need remote assistence, there is a spider hanging in the air two foot away at eye level. It is blocking the route to the chemical weapons dump (Baygon, Mortein, and Mortein Outside).

thanks 4 the response guys-- after reading all the replies, there seems to b
some uncertainty regarding the two editions of xp that i have to work with.

i'm not a computer guru, i'm probably somewhere between beginner >
intermediate, so i'll need to get some of the basics out of the way. by
host, do you mean the computer(desktop) that i want to control ? what is
meant by the term netmeeting and how could i use it for what i want to
accomplish ?

would VERY MUCH app a step by step on how to configure. do i need to use
the "new connection wizard" to configure the settings ? do i need to
configure the laptop as well ? if so, how? would i be better off going
thru a serial, parallel,or usb port rather than ethernet.

as you can see, i really am lost in the woods and help would truly b app.

Create a network connection however you want to. All 4 are just as easy as one another. What hardware do you have - use that (however you need special network cable if connecting card to card rather than via a hub/switch/router and ditto for parralel).

Type conf in start run

Use Remote Desktop or Shared Desktop.
