continuous network chatter - why?

Our setup at home comprises three "deskside" machines and a laptop. All
are running XP Home (SP2) except one which is XP Pro.

Under normal conditions, I see network chatter when a box is booted and
joins the network and then the occasional synchronization - browser
updates I believe. But... if, on the XP Pro machine, I open a
file/folder on one of the other machines then, even after I close it,
there is continuous chatter of about 800 bytes/sec between the Pro
machine and the one on which I opened the folder. (There's a burst of
traffic about once/second.) This continues until either machine is shut
down. I don't see anything unusual in the logs on either machine.

Anyone know what's going on?

TIA

Jason
