Continual Dialing to Internet

On a peer-to-peer network using ICS (internet connection
via an internal modem is on a W2K machine), the new XP Pro
machine causes the W2K machine to dial every few minutes
immediately after starting up. How can I stop this. Also
can I force disconnection from the XP machine (ie the one
without the modem).
I have tried just about every setting in Netbios (file-
sharing will not work without it). What else can I do
Thanks in advance.

I seem to remember having a similar problem some time ago where the client
PC (your XP Pro) was requesting an internet connection through the host PC
(your W2K) as soon as the client PC booted up - never mind when the client
PC actually wanted an internet connection.

I ran msconfig from the run command and switched off/on 'start-up programs"
one by one until I found the program requesting internet access on startup.
By making sure that particular program wasn't loaded at startup the problem
disappeared. It's time consuming but it did the trick.

As to whether you can force a disconnection from the client, I don't know,
and would be interested if there was a way.

Cheers
Nige
