Continous vpn during logoff/logon

I am working form home today setting up a dozen laptops. I need to join them
to my domain at work. I have successfully joined them to the domain, to
rename them via my VPN. But I cannot then log on to the domain with the new
user name because the vpn has shut off when I logged off as Administrator.

Is it possible to force the VPN connection to remain live during the
logoff/on cycle?

I looked in the VPN Properties but was unsure if anything there might solve
my problem.
