Content.IE5

I have no idea why but I can't view or access this folder! Sometimes my
Anti-Virus program will come up and tell me I got a virus in one this
folders subfolders. The Anti-Virus program can't seem to do anything with
it. But I can get to the folder using the anti-virus program (I can see it).
But when I open Explorer I can get to the folder called "Temporary Internet
files" but the "Content.IE5" folder is no where to be found! Needless to say
that the subfiles under Content.IE5 also can not be accessed.

In order to get rid of the infected file I have to empty all the Temporary
files as well as all Off Line files. I'm wondering why I can't access these
files where I'm the only user on this machine and I'm the Administrator. I
have never blocked anything that I know of and I've never been able to
access these files. I also attempted to access this file in SafeMode and
can't. Tried turning off line files off and still no difference. I have gone
through everything I can see that would "HIDE FILES" and have found nothing
that will fix this problem. According to explorer Content.IE5 isn't even
there and I don't get this at all!

Anyone got some ideas!

Seawolf here is a way for you to do this. There are two access points to your
temporary internet files. Use Disk Cleanup and when it comes up check
temporary internet files and hit view files. Don't delete them until you have
carefully studied them and also have gotten copies of what you may need that
didn't download to your system normally. Here when you arrive you should see
different folders with letters and numbers denoting each one and how it was
classified. Unfortunately you can't learn website informaton except from html
files. This is going to work for you and the problem should be solved.

Alan - Is it supposed to be this way? I mean where explorer will not access
Content.IE5! Just wondering!

Thanks!

Ah, I see what you mean by this! The folder has a little lock on it for some
reason! So they probably meant to have this set up this way for some reason.
But now I can get to it in order to get to those bad files if I need too.

Thanks, I don't know what I would do without you folks sometimes!

Ok, now did you try this also. Go to control panel and highlight appearance
and themes. Inside you will find folder options. Go ahead and click this.
What you need to do if you didn't try this is to check show hidden folders
and files. Then I think you will be able to see them possibly if you didn't
try this. Also I e-mailed you because I must have some malware around that is
telling me my posts are always not getting there. My e-mail is waiting in
your hotmail hopefully, if not let me know and I will resend the details but
when you are done hit cancel on disk cleanup if you want your files for
awhile.

Yes, this was the first thing I did try. I unhid everything I can unhide! I
did notice that on the cleanup box there was a little LOCK on it. I guess
the cleanup program is saying that this folder is LOCKED. How does a person
lock or unlock a folder?

It is normal not to be able to access Content.IE5 files, which handle
internal processes. If an anti-virus program is flagging them, that may
be a false-positive, or a saved element of a WEBpage seen as suspicious.

To view/delete these subdirectories (aka Windows "folders"), click
START|FIND and search for "Temporary Internet Files" (no quotes). Several
directories by that name will be shown. Double-click the one that is in
your user directory. An example of what that path might look like...

C:\Documents and Settings\<your name>\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files

If you do not see the full path in the ADDRESS bar of the search window,
click the TOOLS menu|FOLDER OPTIONS|VIEW tab. Enable the item that reads,
"Display the full path in the address bar."

To that path, add "Content.IE5", so it looks like this...
C:\Documents and Settings\<your name>\Local Settings\Temporary Internet
Files\Content.IE5

Press <enter>

The cryptically named Content.IE5 subdirectories should be displayed.
Right-click|DELETE to send them to the RECYCLE BIN, if you must. But this
should not be necessary. They are regenerated as needed.

I generally find that the content.ie5 folders are spyware, virus and trojan
targets. Since these folders are where temp internet files are stored, they
are the staging points for attacks.

I simply *close all instances* of Internet Explorer, search with Agent
Ransack for content.ie5, and delete every one it finds. It's the fastest
way to clear out the caches, and probably saves me (and the client) about
20 - 40 minutes when cleaning up a machine.

yes, the folders will be rebuilt on demand.

To delete *all* Temporary Internet Files...

1) Start | Run | Type: inetcpl.cpl | OK
Or right click the Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop.
Or: Start | Settings | Control Panel | Internet Options.
Best to do this with all instances of Internet Explorer closed. Especially
if there are a large number of files.
2) On the General Tab, in the middle of the screen, click on Delete Files
3) Check the box Delete all offline content {This cleans >> C:\Documents
and Settings\YourNameHere\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files AND
C:\Documents and Settings\YourNameHere\Local Settings\Temporary Internet
Files\Content.IE5 and \Content.MSO
4) Click on OK and wait for the hourglass icon to stop after it deletes the
temporary internet files
5) You can now click on Delete Cookies and click OK to delete cookies that
websites have placed on your hard drive.
-----

If you want, try this: Open IE | Tools | Internet Options | Advanced tab |
scroll down to the bottom | check: Empty Temporary Internet Files folder
when browser is closed | click Apply | OK. Entirely up to you, but if you
want to be rid of this, it is done automatically. Deletes the content of
C:\Documents and Settings\YourNameHere\Local Settings\Temporary Internet
Files but not the Content.IE5 or Content.MSO folders.

Disk Cleanup (cleanmgr.exe) will *not* clean:
C:\Documents and Settings\Your Name Here\Local Settings\Temporary Internet
Files\Content.IE5

Disk Cleanup (cleanmgr.exe) *will* clean:
C:\Documents and Settings\Your Name Here\Local Settings\Temporary Internet
Files

I use Agent Ransack very regularly. Just as a note, it does *not* have to
be installed to the local machine. You can install it to a USB key, so you
can include it with the other hijack and trojan removal tools on the key.
It will work on the next machine you plug the key into.

USB Key? I know that USB means Universal Serial Buss! Some KeyBoards are
USB!
What's this USB Key and how do you do it!
Sounds interesting!
Always up for something new!

Hi SeaWolf,

I'm sorry it took a little bit to get back to you about the locks on the
file folders. You can't do anything about the locks on History or
Content.IE5. If you do though get into some programming you probably can
manipulate this in Visual Basic.

Hope this helps,

Alan
