What you see when you type in the first letter is not from the contacts
list, but from the last 29 addresses you sent messages to.

To see the contacts list, start a message, then in the new message box,
click Tools and then Select Recipients.

Alternatively, in the main Windows Mail window, click on the first
symbol to the triangle to the right of Send/Receive.

Windows Mail only remembers recipients you have recently sent
mail to. Strangely, it does not use Contacts for that. The newer
Windows Live Mail program works much better in that regard.

Apparently your friend did not transfer the contacts properly.
Can you ask him the location and format of what he transferred?
