Contacts-Newbe Question

I just had a session with someone who asked me questions
about people in my contact list.
I was surprised that someone else can view my contact
list.
Is there a way I can make my contact list private, or is
this just the way it works?

No one can see your contact list but you (and whomever else can see your screen).
