When composing a new mail message and clicking on the To button, in the Show
Names From drop down to select the various address sources my local Contacts
do not appear in the list. Is there a setting missing somewhere? It is
Outlook 2003 on an XP machine.

right click on the contacts folder, properties, outlook address book tab,
check show as address book

What do you do when the checkbox "Show contacts as an Outlook Address Book"
is grayed-out and cannot be checked (Outlook 2007)

You need a new mail profile in that case.

That's a sign you migrated data to this profile incorrectly. Tell us the
rest of this story.

I am having the same problem. I have just migrated my Office Outlook 2003
from my old PC with Windows XP to a new laptop with Windows Vista Home
Premium. I used the Windows Easy Transfer Wizard. The contacts are showing
correctly in Outlook, but similar to Alan 77056, the checkbox "Show contacts
as an Outlook Address Book" is grayed-out and cannot be checked. Any
assistance would be appreciated.

Assistance has already been provided countless times in this group. You
never use WET with Outlook. It creates an Outlook profile that is corrupt.
Create a new Outlook profile. Use a valid method to migrate your data.
While you are at it, open a support incident with Microsoft. They created
and have not addressed or even acknowledged this problem. They should be
embarrassed.
