Constant error messages

I am getting constant error messages on booting my XP Home (SP2) system. One
says 'Generic Host Process has encountered a problme and has to close' -
sometimes these are backdated, sometimes they appear to be 'current'. Also
recently I get a message saying 'svchost.exe the instruction at '0x7c9105f8'
referenced memory at '0x00000010'
My boot-up time has incresased dramatically also.
I have defragged, tried to remove unnecessary programmes at stratup etc to
no avail.
Can anyone offer any useful advice please?
