What is Data Execution Prevention, Win32 Servicees error?

George

When I boot up one of my PC's in the morning, I've been getting (for a few
months) two error messages, and wondered if someone might know how to
properly resolve.

This PC is using WinXP (SP-2 with all updates), it's on a small network with
a router linking 2 PCs total, 2 HP networked printers, that's about it.
Other PC doesn't do this. The error'ing PC does have lots of games, kids
use a lot. All PC's get regular defrags, disk cleanup, file backups, etc.

The error(s) is(are) as follows, thanks for any suggestions,
George

DEP is present on newer hardware. The DEP component in XP augments the
hardware based control (most protection). It also offers software based
protection to systems that do not have the hardware feature (not as
effective).

You receive a "Data Execution Prevention" error message in Windows XP
Service Pack 2 or in Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/875351/en-us

Your error message is referring to the generic host process - something
that hosts code execution for many different applications (programs,
drivers, possible malware) so tracking down what exactly is causing the
error message on your system may be a little difficult.

You might try disabling startup items since that's when the message
appears. If you get the error message on startup, it would be a driver or
service at the root of the problem. Try disabling 3rd party services
(update if able to pinpoint troublemaker) and updating drivers.

If no error message, then one of the startup programs is running amok with
DEP. Enable startup items one at a time in an effort to pinpoint which
program is causing the error. If able to determine the program, check with
software vendor for an update.

Thanks, that's a great idea and probably fairly fast to zoom in on likely
culprit for the DEP problem by doing process of elimination on the start-up
items.

I haven't looked at start-up things lately and don't quickly recall how to
get to the start-up application checkboxes (I think that's what they look
like, right?) and wondered if you could share the couple of steps to get
there, thanks.

My suspicion is that it's related to the HP all-in-one driver...this HP is a
network printer, and for some reason the network thing and also its drivers
seem to be problematic...

My question is...can a remote thing like a network printer send bad stuff
back to the PC and cause the DEP problem, or is it more likely a PC-resident
software or driver that's the culprit...any ideas?

Thanks,
George

For startup troubleshooting use Start> Run> MSCONFIG
That will bring up the System Configuration utility (has a "startup" tab).

Yes, it's possible that the HP driver is at fault. Even though it's a
remote request it is still asking the target PC to do "something." That
something requires local resources. If DEP is protecting those resources
than the error message would appear.

If it turns out it is this driver and HP does not have an update for it,
check out the detailed article linked at the end of the article I referred
you too. There you will find directions on how to exclude a specific bit of
software (including drivers) from DEP's umbrella. Excluding doesn't fix the
problem but it will stop the message nags about the problem DEP has
detected.
