Hello again,
I have just installed about 2 weeks ago a new Hard drive .. it is a western
digital 160G.WD 160 DAJB. I have formated this thing and reinstallled xp at
least 8 times.
It crashes before I can even get windows updates done. I have had so many
error numbers itis unreal .. 0x0000001e, 0x00000050. 0x000000074, 0x000000D1.
and Im sure there have been others . I am so frustrated.. I have tuneup
utilittes and have run all the fix its there.
I have managed to get updates done as far as the critical ones .. and have
IE7.
I was up til 4 am getting updates done this am . It seems like when I try to
install something it crashes.
Also, I have not been able to get access to drive over 137G. Dos tells me to
get it in windows .. windows tells me to do it in DOS. Tells me I have only
one hard drive, to install second one. I have reset the set up as master
duel, or single drive. I am on single now.
I am truly beginning to believe I have purchased a bad hard drive.
I have all my protection on avg anti virus, adaware , etc. At this point all
I have installed is necessary installs ..
If anyone has any tips on this ,, please tell me.

Thanks again,
Destinee

I have since first post changed jumper setting to default/cable... so far no
crashes , but any advice will still be appreciated

Couple of clues:

1. XP can't handle a SATA drive natively. The drive has to be accessed via a
SATA driver built into the motherboard or you have to install SATA drivers
during the installation process.

2. FAT32 drive format cannot access volumes in excess of 137 GB. You'll have
to use NTFS if you want to take full advantage of the space on your new hard
drive. Or else partition the drive into logical drives, each smaller than
137GB.

NTFS is FAR superior: Capacity in the terabyte range, faster, built in
security features, and self-healing when problems occur.
