Constant annoying pop-ups on taskbar

Hi! I keep getting these unbelievably annoying pop-ups on the task bar every
few seconds, giving me information about the precise status of my wireless
connection. These block my documents and even pop up in the middle of games
(that are using the full screen). I've searched everywhere for a way to turn
it off, but can't find one. Can anyone help?

http://support.microsoft.com/?id=307729

This article explains how to disable Notification Area balloon tips.

IMPORTANT : This article contains information about editing the registry. Before you edit the registry, make sure you understand how to
restore it if a problem occurs. For information about how to do this, view the "Restoring the Registry" Help topic in Regedit.exe or the
"Restoring a Registry Key" Help topic in Regedt32.exe.

To Disable The Notification Area Balloon Tips

Click Start , click Run , type regedit , and then press ENTER.

Navigate to the following subkey:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\
CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced
Right-click the right pane, create a new DWORD value, and then name it EnableBalloonTips .

Double-click this new entry, and then give it a hexadecimal value of 0 .

Quit Registry Editor. Log off Windows, and then log back on.

These steps disable all Notification Area balloon tips for this user. There is no way to disable balloon tips for specific programs only.

Thanks for the tip. Sounds all Very Scary, what with making sure I know how
to restore, etc.etc. Where, for instance, do I find Regedit.exe??

I use XP Pro sp2 and have used the routine in your response. However, that
does not work for XP pop-ups. Ex. XP Catagories view | Control Panel. On
mouse-over of Performance & Maintenance a pop-up appears saying "Schedule
regular maintenance checks, increase space on your hard disk, or configure
energy-savings settings." I nwant to remove this and others. Do you have
any ideas?
