connection wizard won't let me choose manual dial-up

i recently installed xp professional on my laptop that
was running w2000. after installation, my dialup
connection was gone. if i go to control panel> network
and internet connnections> setup or change internet
connections> internet properties> setup> new connection
wizard> connect to the internet> set up my connection
manually, ......... at this point, the next choice would
be "connect using a dial-up modem", however, that choice
is visible at the top, but inactive, in that, when i
mouse over the dot to choose it, it is inactive and i
can't make that choice. the only choice that works
is "connect using a broadband connection that is always
on"

my modem is shown on my harware profile.

any clues?????????

uninstall then reinstall the modem. worked for me.

the modem came as part of my laptop. can't reinstall

you can't go to device manager and choose to uninstall? I've never dealt
with a laptop so I am shooting in the dark.
