Connection to POP3 server keeps dropping

When retrieiving mail from ISP w/Outlook 2003 SP1, I continually get the
error message:
Task 'server name - Sending and Receiving' reported error (0x800ccc0f): 'The
connection to the server was interrupted. If this problem continues, contact
your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP). The server
responded: +0K' just as Outlook is starting to pull the message header down.
I am running Norton Internet Security 2005; I have in the past disabled
incoming email AV scanning which allowed messages through. I had to
re-install NIS today, and now that "workaround" no longer works. I have gone
through the MS troubleshooting suggestions (except for re-installing Outlook
Express) without managing to shoot the trouble.

Similar experiences, advice, and workarounds much appreciated.

Many people find that simply disabling Norton's scan of mail is not enough.
The product must be uninstalled and reinstalled without that option.
