I installed a u.s.robotics modem 56k fax pci for
windows,it has v.92 and v.90 itu.when i connect to the
internet the icon in the tray( the 2 little tv's)shows
only two connect speeds 46.6 and 48Kbps.These are not the
correct connect speeds.I have up-dated everything that is
up-gradeable with no luck.would appreciate any help.E-
mail me at (e-mail address removed)

In newsgroups, replies normally go to the group, so all can participate
and learn.

Why do you not believe those to be the correct INITIAL speeds? They are
not untypical. Be aware too, that speed can vary over the life of the
session - and you won't know it.

Seems to me you are getting really excellent speeds.

Presently, full 56k connection speeds can only be achieved in laboratory
conditions. Your connection speeds will depend on the distance you are from
the telephone company's Central Office (the further you are, the lower the
speed).

Your connection speed will also depend on the line quality of your
connection. Each time you place a telephone call, it will take a different
route to the person you are dialing. The call is routed through different
lines and switches, depending on their availability. Some switches and lines
are older, and therefore somewhat more corroded. This corrosion will cause
some slight noise on the line. Noise that can create a slight annoyance for
voice calls, can spell death or lower speeds for Internet data connections.
Therefore, on one Internet connection you may establish a 43.6k speed, and
if you hang up and dial again, you may establish a 45k or better connection.

Line noise can also be introduced by the quality of your home's internal
phone wiring. The wiring in phone jacks can be loose or corroded, especially
in older homes. Also, the line coming from your phone jack into your modem
will need to be in good condition for the higher speed connections.

Your actual download speed will be affected by the speed of your computer.
This is especially true if you have a software modem that uses your CPU chip
to process the modem data, instead of a dedicated chip on the modem board.

Finally, your download speed will be a factor of the overall traffic on the
Internet. Also, if a particular web site's server is slow, and/or there's a
large volume of traffic on that server, your download speeds will be
correspondingly slower.

Sounds about right, 56k modems do not connect at 56 k very
often. The quality of the telephone lines, corrosion,
Internet server loads, often cause speeds as low as 35 kbps
with a 56k modem.

You can get a program called NetStat Live free from
www.anlogx.com to monitor your speed

If you ant more you'll have to get DSL or cable.

I was a experimented 56k gamer, now i have adsl, but i
found many thing about 56k connection.

I normaly was connected whit winxp, at 50kbps, and the
download was about 6kb/s, and upload about 3kb/s, i think
fast for an analog modem, but i dont see this whit other
operating systems, whit the same hardware, line, etc.

I was using a usr robotics serial external 56k modem, and
i use a utility called Control Center, from robotics, you
can found it, in the ftp server of robotics.

Whit control center, you can configure in an easy way the
performance of the robotics modems, it works whit the pci
too, i suggest to reset the configuration, before every
session, to "hardware control flow", the program do the
rest.

By other hand, you can dowload an utility called DRTCP.EXE
(size 53.5 kb), from www.dslreports.com, an change some
tcp protocol parameters.

In my experience, i found like the best 56kbps connection
settings for the protocol, this parameters:

RWIN: 4288 (MUST IMPORTANT SETTING)
WINDOW SCALING: NO
TIME STAMPS: YES (you can experiment whit this)
SELECTIVE ACKS: YES
MTU: 576 (MUST IMPORTANT SETTING)
PATH MTU DISCOVERY: NO
BLACK HOLE DETECTION: NO
MAX DUPLICATES ACKS: DEFALUT (BLANK)
TIME TO LIVE: DEFAULT (BLANK)

Aditionally, call to the telephone office, for technical
support, about line noise, to fix it, an do it
periodically.

To see if you have line noise, you can follow this steps:

(aply just for robotics modems)

1.- connect to internet for a fixed time, about 10
minutes, and navigate some time.
2.- disconnect.
3.-Go to Hyperterminal, and make a connection to the com
port where your modem is connected, since is a pci modem,
maybe is com 3 or 4.
4.-When connected to your modem com port, type in the
terminal screen this: ATI 11
5.- In the results, search for a parameter called "SNR",
if you see a value less that 49, your line have noise, and
when smallest value in SNR, more noisy is your line.
6.-Type in the screen ATI 6.
7.- Here you can search for some parameters: "Blers"
and "negative links"
8.- You see the amount of blers you have in your last
connection, for a healthy connection, you must have less
of 60 blers by one minute (divide blers for the connection
time, in minutes), if you have more, the quality of the
line is bad, it affect the links, and you can see how much
negative links you have.
