An annoying bug? in XP Home is the tendency for the internet connection icon
to disappear from the System tray. Does anyone have a solution please? (I

Actually, I haven't ever had this happen and I've had XP since it came
out and my LAN has 8 machines on it now. Problems with Internet
connectivity often involve virus infection and/or spyware. Here are the
standard troubleshooting steps:

1) Scan with current antivirus ("current" means a version not later than
2002 but using updated virus definitions); 2) remove spyware with
Spybot Search & Destroy (www.security.kolla.de) and Ad-aware
(www.lavasoftusa.com) - note that it is a good idea to do virus/spyware
scans in Safe Mode; 3) delete temporary and Temporary Internet Files;
4) stop unnecessary services/programs from starting with Windows - see
www.blackviper.com for services info and www.pacs-portal.co.uk
startup_index.htm for programs info - 5) look in Event Viewer for
clues.

Post back if you need more help, including your system specs and what
you've already done to troubleshoot the issue.

It may be just getting hidden: R-click in a spare bit of Taskbar, make
sure 'Lock' is not checked (click on it if it is) then take Properties.

Have 'Hide inactive icons' checked, then click Customise. Next to the
one in question, use the drop down to select 'Always show'

run regedit and goto HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows
\CurrentVersion\Explorer\TrayNotify right click the hive and select
permissions highlight your user name and put an x in deny for full control
and read.
