How do I need to set up XP Pro and 98SE to send data
between the machines using a straight-through cable on
the LPT ports?

Or is there a better way to do this using the USB ports?

I recommend that, in Windows XP, you go to Help and Support and enter
"Direct Cable Connection". XP provides for a variety of connections and all
are explained. If you use a parallel port, be sure to buy a purpose made
Direct Connection cable. You cannot use any old cable - like from a printer.
I also recommend making a older machine the Host.

Good luck,

Ed
