I have been given a microsoft k/b and mouse, with no instructions. I tried
just replacing the 'connected ' devices with the new ones but it didn't work.

Help told me to click on 'Bluetooth devices' in control panel but I don't
have that in my control panel. ( I am not sure if these are bluetooth devices
anyway).
What do I have to do to instal them?

Before going nuts installing something you might not need, try to
identify what models this wireless keyboard and mouse is. Should be
somewhere on each component. Then type those model numbers into Google
along with the word "driver," and then see if you can find out what to
do next.

Some MS wireless input devices are Bluetooth, but not all, so I wouldn't
install Bluetooth unless it is necessary for you equipment.

Look under the k/b and mouse to identify the model and report that info
here!

As others suggested, have a look at the concerned hardwares(identify the
model nos.)and proceed accordingly.More information here:-

The link which I have provided earlier is based on intelltype wireless
keyboard and mouse installation.

I have connected the devices through the USB hub and they work. However I
would like to free up the USB hub so I willl try your other suggestions .
Many thanks to you all.
Not sure which is the model no. so I will give you all the nos I can find
K/B: 75709-OEM 2911933 - 10440 M/S P/N X800015-102
Mouse: P/N 800412 - 101 PID 75709 OEM 5375701 - 0040438 CMii ID
2003DJ1034.
With all those numbers I hope this gives yo the info you asked for?

You do realise you can daisy chain 127 USB devices..so get another hub.
wasn't so much the model number but the model i.e. wireless optical mouse
2.0 (which I Think is the one you have) or comfort keyboard 1.0A etc.
Whilst they basically work OK you will need the updated drivers to get the
full benefit from the devices. This can be obtained from the microsoft
website http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/mouseandkeyboard/default.mspx

Thanks Bob B. The items are the ones you listed. I have been to the website
and downloaded some software which I will check Out.
I realise I can use USB hub extenders I may have to do that.. Ideally I
would like to use the other hubs which should work. I will experiment more
when I have some time.
At least I have them working and have the software to get the best use out
of them.

Thanks for your help
