I have a laptop that I use at work, which connects to a domain. When I take
this laptop home, and try and connect it to my home PC which is a workgroup,
I am unable to get the laptop to see the internet.

I have local administrator rights on the laptop and have set my firewalls up
- I think.

I am able to ping each pc from the other - but still no internet access.

Any help would be appreciated.

Many Thanks

Are you using a dial-up or cable/DSL connection? If dial-up
you can configure Internet Connection Sharing and use your
desktop as the host. The XP wizard will guide you and setup
the connection. The desktop has to be ON in order for it to
work.

If you're on dial-up, it might be easier to just setup the
dial-up connection on each machine.

If you have cable/DSL, purchase a router and connect using
the router, it is easier than trying to use ICS.

There are lots of specials available now for wired and
wireless routers. That will allow each machine to see the
Internet w/o the other machine being turned ON. The
machines will also be able to see each other through the
router.

You can use ICS with any Internet connection, but a router
is low cost (under $50 ) and makes it easier and safer
(hardware firewall to Internet).

Internet connection sharing set up using the wizard - still unable to connect
to the internet. I have a usb - dsl modem on my home pc. I' m unwilling to
purchase a router as it's for work, and work have problems buying one for use
at home!.

Is it to do with the laptop belongng to a domian and the home pc a workgroup!.

Your best investment would be a DSL/Cable Modem router.
This would solve your issues. You should unplug (from power) the DSL modem
before hooking it into the router. Although - it doesn mean you will have
to have a Network Card in your Home PC as well - as you will not be able to
use the USB connection from the router to your home PC any longer.

If all you want is for your Laptop to have Internet Connection whileat home
and at the same time you don't care if your home PC has Internet
connection - then you can try unplugging the DSL router from the Home PC and
then from powerr. Leave it unplugged from power for 5 minutes. Plug it
back into power and then hook the DSL Modem into your laptop. This should
work if your ISP doesn't limit you by MAC address (which you would have told
them your MAC address if it did) and it assigns IPs dynamically - but like
many ISPs, only gives you ONE IP per DSL modem unless you pay for more.

And no - your problem is unlikely to have anything to do with being a member
of a domain or not.
