Connecting W9x to W2k Shares

Hello:

I am looking for documentation on connecting W9x clients to a W2k
server. Currently, when I connect (start>run... \\servername) I get
prompted for a password.

As I recall, the user name and password on the W9x box must match
exactly a user (with proper credentials) on the W2k box. The questions
are:

1. Where do I set up this user on the W9x box? (Apparently not in the
Users control panel).

2. Does the machine have to be set to use the "Client for Microsoft
Networks" as the Primary Network Logon (in the Network control panel)?

3. Is there some other way to supply the proper credentials from the
W9x machine?

4. Is there anything different for the various flavors of "enhanced
DOS"? (W95, W98, or ME)

(Note: I can usually resolve this stuff by playing around. However,
here I need to document it so end-users have a clear set of
instructions.)

Thanks.

1. Just login with a valid username and make sure you can see the
domainfield in the loginscreen.

2. yes.

3. No, just login. Make sure you have the networkproperties, 2nd tab set to
login to NT and fill in the domainname.

4. Make sure you have WINS installed on the server and that options 044 and
046 (0x8) are set in DHCP-server, Scope options.

5. Make sure that the TCP/IP properties on th W9x are set to obtain an IP
automatically from your DHCP-server, set WINS to get it from the
DHCP-server, set DNS to no.

Thanks, Marina. However, I am not actually having these machines join
a domain. They are establishing a VPN connection to the router and
then just trying to access shared resources on the server.

Under an NT-based OS (W2k or XP), the user makes the VPN connection
and then can browse to \\servername. The server then askes for
username and password and gives access to specific shares based on
that. Under a DOS-based OS (W9x or ME), you are only prompted for a
password -- the username must match whoever logged in initially.

What is the clean way to set this up? Can it be done using Users or
must it be the user "created" when you set Primary login to Client for
Microsoft Networks?

thanks.

If you mean would you have to create the user locally on the W9x, no you
won't. You just have to login the W9x with a known username (known to the
network) and make sure the domainfield is the same as your domain.
In Networkproperties on the W9x you have the client for microsoft networks
and there you check the "login NT"-box and fill in the name of your domain.
On tab Identification, you fill in the domainname in the workgroupfield.
That should do it.
In the properties of the VPN-connection you have to check the 'login
domain'.
