Connecting to an existing network

First of all let me say i know little. I have an existing
network and wanted to update a computer. 2 are using XPpro
2 are using 98. I purchased NEC with XP pro already
loaded. I ran this up at home and loaded my work programs.
Then took to and connected to the network. went through
the wizaed but it just does not connect. Have internet
connection but not network. One thing I have noticed is
thatafter logging on the heading below "My Computer" is
missing ie "My network Places".Is it something to do with
set up or was it loaded without something.
