at my work, we had 6 compaq computers all hooked up to
this messed up network that no one bothered to explain to
us. one of the compaqs died so we built a new computer
with off the shelf pieces (i hate compaq). i got a copy
of XP pro for $30 thru college. all the other computers
do that "press ctl+alt+del to log on" but there isnt a
domain. just a workgroup. we have one computer that
everyone calls the server but is only a shared file
computer with everything on it. from what we know, a
fractional t1 comes in and goes to a router. from there
it goes to an old switch from the early 90s. then it
looks like it goes to each computer, but no one knows
because it goes thru the walls and celing. i just want to
be able to look at the "servers" files and go online. can
anyone help?

Just setup the workgroup name in the Control
panel/system/computer name.
Make sure you have file and printer sharing enabled on
the XP machine and disable the XP firewall...should work
like a charm

tried that but was able to create a workgroup that only i
am on and i can share my files with myself.
next questions, how do i get rid of this workgroup i
created and exclusivly belong to.
