Connecting Palm pilot to desktop USB connection not recognised

I have just bought a Palm T/X palm pilot. When I first plugged in the device
with USB cable, computer message came up that there was unidentified
hardware...I thought it was because hadn't yet installed the palm software.
I installed palm software and was able to set it up and hotsync it once, but
then with subseqent hotsyncs, the connection (through USB cable) with the
desktop could not be established. I tried different ports with the same
result? any advice??

Uninstall all the Palm software and any reference in the USB
properties in Device manager for the Palm. Then, install
the software after a reboot. Only when the software is
installed, connect the USB device, in this case the Palm.
