Connecting locally to a server

Suppose I come into an office where I have never used the Windows 2000 server.
However, they have set up a username and password on the server for me.

I plug my computer into their high speed local area network. After that
where do I find, on the net say, good step-by-step instructions on what
I do to set up my software that so that I can access their server and
their printer? I would preferably like one set of instructions if my
computer is an XP and a second set if my computer is Windows 2000 (unless,
of course, the instructions are the same). Something as easy as possible
to follow would be nice.

I can get any passwords that are required so that's not a problem.

Normally the thing to do would be to make your computer a member of their
domain. This would require intervention (once) by their domain admin on
your computer. Then, when you are in their office, their domain should
appear in the pick list on the logon screen. You pick their domain and then
use the username and password that they gave you and then you are good to
go: you will have access to whatever resources their admin has allowed for
you: printers, shares, whatever.

Note that XP Home cannot join an NT domain -- this is the primary difference
between Home and Pro.

Thanks but I wasn't looking for a high level strategy. I am looking for a
web site that gives me detailed step by step instructions on what to do:
click on this, then click in this, etc.

I have a simular situation in my office. I have to access
my Windows 2000 Server all the time and most of the time
it is from my laptop that is running WindowsXP.

I either connect using Symantec pcAnywhere as a remote
user or connect using the Deskop Remote program which is a
part of WindowsXP.

If I use Desktop remote, I sign on using my regular
network ID and password. If you are only given local
rights on the server you would use that Id and password.
Frankly Desktop Remote seems to work better for me.

I have one other, very basic question. What do you call the cable
that connects the laptop to the ethernet network, since I am going
to have to ask around to find one and want to know what to ask for.

I finally figured out that the secret is to use google for:

DHCP connection windows

If I had only known that DHCP was the secret to access all this!
