Connecting Laptop to XBOX 360 - IP Conflict

I have an existing home LAN network. When I try to connect my xbox 360 to the
laptop there appears to be an IP conflict. This is probably because the
laptop has been configured previously to be networked via LAN cable to
another PC. How do I solve these IP conflicts. It results in the xbox 360 not
being able to get the IP address from the laptop. Inserting it manually also
does not work.

Please describe this network and the router it uses.

If it was connected directly to another PC, it probably has a fixed IP
address. Change it to DHCP when you install the router.

I would suggest that you actually solve the problem by getting a router and
configuring it properly. Routers are cheap these days and easy to set up.

I was hoping to do it without the router since I've been told it's possible.
How do I get around these IP conflicts without the use of a router?

Routers are not expensive and provide better security, you can get a 4-port router
for approx $60 US, however you would need to purchase one that's compatible with
Xbox.

The only other way that may be possible is by using ICS and setting up the laptop
as the gateway, otherwise check the links I provided in my first response.

I've decided to do it the ICS way, this way the computer acts as the router.
I've ticked the box to allow the internet connection to be shared but I am
still receiving these IP confict messages. Any ideas?

If you're unable to connect to Xbox Live, the Xbox Dashboard provides an automatic
network troubleshooter in the System area (under Network Settings) to help you
connect.

You can also try the connection wizard:
