Connecting Internet Please Help

I have a laptop Windows xp Service Pack 1. I had a dial up connecting. Now
I want to switch to Broadband Connection that is always on. I DO NOT logon.
If I plug the ethernet cable in, the "Local Area Connection" turns on a says
that I'm connected. I went to Internet Connection wizard and tried
connection as a broadband connection that is always on. It says it should be
already connected. But when I open internet explorer It still tries to dial
up. Checked to ethernet card (Reinstalled the drivers for it). Tried
erasing the dial up connection. I would still like to keep one though.
Bandband @ School and Dial up @ my parents house.
I can't seem to find anyone that knows whats going on. Please Help

In Connections, you need to check the option that reads
"Dial whenever a Network connection is not present". That
tells XP to use any Broadband/Ethernet connection first &
if that's not available, then use your dial up connectoid.

Tools/Internet options/Connections
and click never dial a connection, this will work for you.
